Gulf Islands, BC

FOLKLIFE is a premium semi-annual print publication inspired by island dwellers who live close to the earth, move with intention, and craft life as an art form. Evoking fine craftership with its minimalist design, matte aesthetic, poetic editorial, and vibrant photography, FOLKLIFE honours art and agriculture, business and creativity, food and farming, and dwellings and nature, all with a goal to slow the FOLK down. Each issue explores one theme through engaging interviews, stories, photographs, recipes, and artwork, celebrating and connecting those who live simply and sustainably.

more about…

We're a bunch of FOLKLIFERS living on the Gulf Islands on the west coast of Canada. We live, love, swim, build, work, grow, create, play, and eat the FOLKLIFE lifestyle. It's delicious. We're made up of entrepreneurs, writers, designers, editors, photographers, weirdos, and lovely people who live with passion and intention, close to the earth, and with an aim to connect and inspire.

FOLKLIFE is a labour of love and we hope your hearts are open. Our current office is on Salt Spring Island—FOLKLIFE gone live—as a summer pop-up concept shop filled with local books, goods, art, coffee, plants, eats, and more, where we think you should visit us. But we have a van, and we get around.

FOLKLIFE is printed in Canada on uncoated, high-quality, sustainably-sourced (FSC) paper for a luxury, timeless, earthy feel.

The Salish sea and the islands it encompasses are the traditional, unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples of Cowichan, Penelakut, Hwlitsum, BOKECEN, CUAN of the WSANEC, TEKTEKSEN, STA,UTW, SKEUWEWC, Halalt, Homalco, K’omok, Klahoose, Lyackson, MALEXEt, Qualicum, Snuneymuxw, Tsawout, Stz’uminus, and Tla’amin, their home since time immemorial.
