A sense of place grounds my one-woman business, Olann Handmade, through design inspiration, regional materials, and knitwear traditions. After completing a degree in Fashion Knitwear Design, I started my company to create thoughtful, handcrafted knitted goods. I personally design and make every Olann product, beginning with environmentally conscious materials in beautiful Irish tweeds, mohair, Canadian wools and merino, and natural dyes. For designs and colors, I find inspiration from the seasonal shifts of the West Coast landscape.
My designs mostly indulge in the craftsmanship and artistry of hand knitting, using different gauge and textured fibres to create garments and accessories that represent a variety of knitting techniques. My work's purpose is to highlight the value and importance of knitting traditions, and I am an advocate of conscious slow-made fashion. From my hands to yours, one stitch at a time.
bio
I grew up in Ireland and today I make my home on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. My grandma taught me how to knit when I was very young, and throughout my life I have always been compelled by handicraft and working with my hands. I love to decorate my home, cook and bake, and work in my garden. I love nature and listening to birdsong, or the sound of waves crashing on shore. I love to go on long walks, listening to music to help me unwind. I love long car rides and looking out the window watching the world pass by. Finding beauty in the small and simple things makes me happy.
